Wedding Ceremony Decor – The Importance of Having a Rain Plan

  |   Advice, Ceremony Decor

When I ask couples about their backup rain plan for the wedding ceremony, I hear way too often “There isn’t one, we will just hope for no rain” At this point in the conversation I typically look over to the bride to continue the conversation and she has this terribly worried expression on her face, I then begin to explain the importance of having some sort of plan in place…….

Hoping for no rain on one of the most important days of your life is not enough of a plan. We encourage our couples to have a Plan A and a Plan B. Plan A: everything goes to plan, the weather is beautiful, the ceremony is hosted outdoors. And of course in the event that the weather does not cooperate, there must be a Plan B, you don’t have just the rain to consider, you also have to consider the possibility of high winds, and extreme cold in Spring and Fall months, some décor options are not ideal and not safe in inclement weather.

Yes, some wedding ceremonies can take place with a light drizzle, but there are so many other factors to consider, will your guest be walking through the wet muddy grass? Will they be cold and uncomfortable after the ceremony and into the evening if it were to rain for the duration of the ceremony? Who will wipe off wet seats for guests to sit in if it rains prior to the ceremony? Will guests be comfortable if there is a cold streak on your wedding day? Outdoor ceremonies are a beautiful option but there are some downsides to consider.

Some venues have a separate location for the ceremony if it were to rain, some venues are able to accommodate this situation better than others. Some venues have separate rooms for an indoor ceremony and some their only option for an indoor ceremony is in the reception room (maybe on the dance floor, in front of the head table etc.) Either way, you will want to know your venue’s options are so you can adequately plan for this. Maybe with your outdoor ceremony, you do not need any decor, but if the ceremony is indoors due to inclement weather that significantly changes the look and feel of the ceremony, you may want to consider having both situations fully planned for when it comes to the decor.

Don’t get caught up in just “hoping” for great weather on your wedding day, have a backup plan, if the thought of planning 2 separate ceremony designs it too much, reach out to a professional for assistance, we would be happy to discuss the options with you, contact us today
